Closure and transition planning

A closure that leaves the site and its region better off.

Virentia brings a key input to closure and transition planning: the site’s next use, and a plan to deliver it. We work with owners of assets nearing end of life, and of land held back by contamination, legacy infrastructure or other encumbrances.

Our technical and construction partners bring the closure and remediation disciplines as required; we bring the next use, its commercial case, development team and the pathway to deliver it with Virentia ReGen.

The earlier we are involved, the more the closure can be shaped around the site’s next use. On an operating site, the final landform and approvals can be designed for that use before closure. On contaminated land, the remediation can be set to the standard that use needs. And the door does not close: we join at any stage, including sites already in rehabilitation.

Five stages of closure and transition planning

  1. Step 1: Asset assessment

Infrastructure, contamination and unaffected land the next use can build on

  2. Step 2: Transition and rehabilitation input

The final landform or remediation standard set once, for the next use

  3. Step 3: Approvals and tenure

The next use written into the closure plan or site management plan, with the approvals it needs

  4. Step 4: Early land release

Unaffected land on the edge of the site to market early

  5. Step 5: Site handover

A sale, a joint venture or transfer to Virentia ReHab

Our input to the owner’s plans

Closure support

What the owner must plan for and deliver. Our input covers the closure or remediation strategy and criteria the regulator can approve, set to suit the next use.

Rehabilitation pathway

How and when the works are done. Our input covers staging, progressive rehabilitation where the site is still operating, and the milestones to relinquishment or site sign-off.

Transition plan

What the land becomes and who benefits. Our input covers the next use and its commercial case, engagement with the community and Traditional Owners, and jobs planning for the workforce and region.
